Volkswagen Beetle celebrates 65 years in the US

Herndon, VA, January 30, 2014 – This month, the Volkswagen Beetle celebrates 65 years since it first arrived in the United States.In January of 1949, a Volkswagen “Type 1,” or Beetle, was shipped to New York City by Ben Pon, Sr., a Dutch businessman and the world’s first official Volkswagen importer. That car – and another, subsequent Beetle – found buyers the same year, marking the first time that Volkswagen vehicles were sold in the United States.

A cultural touchstone for an entire generation and one of the most iconic cars in the world, the Beetle led to the establishment of the first Volkswagen of America headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., in October 1955. In 65 years, Volkswagen has grown from selling two Beetle models in the U.S. to a brand that offers 11 different models that are sold by 644 dealers. In 2013, Volkswagen sold 407,704 vehicles, its second straight year of selling more than 400,000 vehicles and the first time this feat had been achieved since the 1970s.

By the mid-1950s, more than 35,000 Beetle models were on the road, and by 1960, nearly 300,000 had found buyers. Americans were not only drawn to the affordability and practicality of the early Beetle, but were so charmed by its unique design, its size, and its fuel economy that they’d forged an emotional bond with the cars.

From custom paint jobs to open-­‐top Dune Buggy bodies, the Beetle fit perfectly into the counter culture of the 1960s. By 1968, as many as 423,008 Beetle vehicles a year were being sold in the United States. In 1977, the last “Type 1” Beetle rolled off the production line in Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen introduced the New Beetle in 1998, a vehicle that paid styling homage to its predecessor, although its engine was water cooled rather than air cooled, and mounted at the front rather than at the rear.

Redesigned for just the second time in history, the third-generation Beetle entered the U.S. market in 2011. While staying true to its roots, today’s Beetle would be unrecognizable to buyers in the 1950s, thanks to its combination of powerful and fuel-efficient engines, sure-footed handling, and myriad technology and safety features. In addition to being fun-to-drive, the 2014 Beetle earned a 5-star Safety Rating from the Government’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

The third-generation Beetle sold more than 43,000 units in the United States in 2013, making it one of the most popular vehicles in the Volkswagen family, and a leading player in the market for two-door specialty coupes and convertibles.

Apex Festival needs your help

Is it really the end for the VW Bay Window?

All reporting that the last model rolling off the production line on the 20th of December, 2013. The Kombi’s demise had come about due to new safety laws which came into effect at the start of 2014 “all new cars sold in Brazil have to be equipped with ABS and airbags”. Even though the Bay Window Kombi has been ‘upgraded’ over the years, integrating these new features wasn’t an option – probably due to financial constraints. Volkswagen decided that the only option was to cease production, but as is tradition they offered a Last Editionto mark the end of 63 years production.

Within days of production ending, rumours started appearing that it might not be the end. Brazil’s government are considering bending the law to accommodate the continued production. Brazilian finance minister argues that “the original design could not include these features, as in 1950, airbags or ABS were not available, at least not to passenger cars”. With VW’s Kombi being the sixth best selling commercial vehicle in Brazil, and used by many small businesses, there are lots of support for it’s continued production.

Volksworld magazine reported that they had spoken with Mark Reynolds of Just Kampers, who’s been to the VW factory in Brazil many times. Mark told Volsworld “…as far as we can see, it looks like there has been a massive turn around at VW Brazil and the VW Kombi will be made for another 3 years… It’s not official yet as everybody at VW Brazil seems to be on ‘vacation’, but it’s all over the Brazilian press, that the Kombis will go back into production!”

So it’s with bated breath that the world waits to find out it the Kombi will carry on.

New Bus adjustable beams from Cool Air

These new beams are a direct replacement for the original unit but with custom looks and manufactured here in the UK from high quality material. They can be fitted on all Bay Window Buses and Splitscreen Buses as long as you are happy to run Ball Joint suspension. If you wish to convert your Split Screen Bus to ball joint front suspension then Cool Air can also supply all the parts you need.

Cool Air have been working on the design and manufacture of these beams for over 10 months. Every detail has been carefully designed and manufactured to the highest standard, here in the UK, using the highest quality materials. The end result has meant that there is no equal product currently on the market in design, quality and price. Currently these GermanWagen beams are currently available in two flavours.

Sold outright, with no exchange required, these new beams should be available mid February. We don’t have a price for these, but Rob has promised to let us know first. It’s A Dub Life

It’s A Dub Life has been produced by club member Rachel Johnston as part of her 3rd year BA photography course. Rachel has been studying photography at the University of Greenwich and you may have come across her pointing her camera in your direction at many VW shows over the last few years.

It’s the marriage of her passion for photography and love of VW’s that has driven her to produce this book as part of her final year project. It’s A Dub Life is a 32 page, full colour publication completely published by Rachel herself. Each shoot covers a double page spread, showing both owners and their VWs, delivering a great example of the personalities within our scene. Although started as a photographic project, Rachel encouraged each owner to explain their own story and has included the stories to complement her images.[/vc_column_text][mk_image src=”” image_width=”792″ image_height=”400″ crop=”false” lightbox=”false” frame_style=”simple” link=”” target=”_blank” caption_location=”inside-image” align=”center” margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”false” align=”left” margin_bottom=”0″]Even though this project was a lot of work Rachel thoroughly enjoyed producing it and is now considering continuing throughout the coming season, so I guess we should look out for volume 2 soon. New show for 2014 – Aircooled 14

Graham Lyall’s been in contact to let us know bout a new show for next years calendar, Aircooled 14. The show will run over the weekend of 27 –29 June 2014. We’ll Let Graham explain more…


Having chatted to a lot of people over the last couple of years it became apparent that it was time for an Aircooled Only VW Show, there are a number of well known events across Europe but currently nothing here in the UK itself.


We wanted to choose a location with easy access from all over the UK & Europe and we think our choice of Stratford Racecourse fits that criteria, easy access from the motorway network and great signage already in place on all major routes into the town.
Stratford is well known as the birthplace of William Shakespeare and the location of the recently refurbished Royal Shakespeare Company located on the banks of the River Avon. In order to see some of these sites we are working to get shuttle buses in place that will run into the town centre (only 5 minutes away) on a regular basis making it a great location for all of the family.
A craft fair or farmers markets is held in the market square every Saturday morning so a great place to stock up on local produce.

What Vehicles are Eligible

The centre area within the racecourse will be exclusive for aircooled vehicles only or those vehicles that were originally fitted with an aircooled engine. The only watercooled vehicles allowed into the centre area will be traders/caterers and support vehicles. We hope that people will respect this decision, as there are plenty of shows that cater for the wider VW scene.


At Aircooled14 the camping area is part of the main show allowing clubs and individual campers to either prep their vehicle or set up club displays whilst remaining in their camping location. Rather than having 2 separate locations all of this will be incorporated into the main aircooled only area within the centre of the Racecourse.
Those driving a water cooled vehicle but wanting to camp within the main show area are welcome to bring their own tent or rent a Bell Tent from our good friends at Magical Camping for the duration of the event. Their car would need to be parked in the overflow area outside the main show area.


There will be traders on site that either sell parts/autojumble or provide services that help to keep our aircooled vehicles on the road. We are allowing a limited number of clothing suppliers but again ones that are VW related.

Vintage Bike Paddock, Vintage Cruiser Bike & Shopper Races

Into your vintage bikes?, there will be the opportunity to camp with fellow bike enthusiasts creating a vintage bike paddock area.
Whilst the racecourse isn’t suitable for motor powered racing there’s plenty of area to race bikes in a circuit. Classes still to be finalized but intital ideas are to have races for vintage cruiser style bikes (no gears) and races for the ubiquitous ‘Shopper Bike’. Prizes for winning as well as best fancy dress.

Don’t own an air cooled vehicle?

For those that still want to camp in their vehicle that’s not aircooled, there is a camp site at Stratford Racecourse immediately outside of the Centre area, they are more than welcome to camp here but booking for this must be done directly with the campsite itself as we have no control at all over the area and it is not part of the site that we have booked.

The Team behind the Show

The main driver behind the show is Graham Lyall but is working with a team of like minded people and local groups DTA & RSVP to help deliver the show. Graham started Midland Early Bay 6 years ago and before that worked in the event industry for over 20 years so will be calling on a combination of skills gained across the event & VW world to make this show a success.

New Bay Window Bus drop spindles from Cool Air

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][mk_image src=”” image_width=”792″ image_height=”140″ crop=”false” lightbox=”false” frame_style=”simple” target=”_self” caption_location=”inside-image” align=”left” margin_bottom=”10″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”true” align=”left” margin_bottom=”40″]Dropped spindles are a great way to lower your Bus while keeping the original suspension geometry and ride comfort. Basically a dropped spindle is created by moving the bearing spindle vertically upwards on the steering arm, in turn lowering your bus. Drop spindles offer, in theory, a quick and simple way to drop the front of your ride. There’s no welding required and should be achievable by a competent mechanic within a few hours.  Over the years there have been a few different types of dropped spindles on offer.

  • First there are the ‘welded’ type, where two sets of original spindles are used to create one new set of dropped spindles.
  • Second, are the ‘flipped-balljoint’ type, where a standard spindle is machined to accept alternative ball joints, fitted upside-down. This allows the spindle to me mounted above the training arms – instead if the standard possession below them.
  • Third, we have newly manufactured forged spindles, such as these new offerings from Cool Air.

These all new dropped spindles are designed to fit all Bay Window Buses from 1973 to 1979. They can be fitted to early 68-72, Bays, but you will need to use later, 1973 onwards, brake disc’s, callipers, etc. Cool Air can also supply these too, if you need them. They have been designed to fit perfectly in place of your original spindles, without any modification. This means your ball joints will remain the correct way up and will not reach their limit of travel, affording you both correct steering and suspension travel. Unlike other Bus dropped spindles, there is no exchange required, so you can buy these before pulling your current front end apart.

Once installed these forged dropped spindles will lower the front of your Bay by 6cm and they can be used with most alloy wheels, plus original 14″ steel wheel fitted to 1973 to 1979 models. Due to the construction of the spindle the offset of your wheels will be increased by 10mm each side. This means that the wheels will stick further out from their standard position.

Sold in pairs by Cool Air for only £519.50 including VAT. However, don’t forget you will get your usual Paintscrapers club discount – as long as you’re registered with them. If you’re not, then speak to Darren at a club meet and he’ll add you to the list.
